What is the difference between a Sync and a Master License?

When music is “attached to” or becomes a part of any production (film, television program, commercial, web site, etc) it requires a license. That license is a Synchronization License.  It gives the producer the right to synchronize the COMPOSITION only, NOT the recording.  If the producer wants to use a specific pre-existing recording, they would also require a Master Use License.  We grant both types if licenses and can negotiate any piece of music for use, whether it is in our library or not.

_____________________________________________

What is a Blanket License?

This license allows for the uninhibited use of the music library for a specific series of programs to be created during a specified time period.

What is a Direct Performance License?

A direct performance license is used when and where there is no contract between ASCAP & BMI and the broadcaster. We can issue a direct performance license for these unaffiliated broadcasters. Fees, if required are negotiated. Contact us for more information.

_____________________________________________

What are ASCAP and BMI?

ASCAP and BMI are both Performing Rights Organizations.  They collect performance royalties on the artists and publishers behalf.  Broadcasters are responsible to maintain valid performing rights licenses with ASCAP or BMI in the US or with other performing rights societies in other countries. Productions created for broadcast (commercials, programming, films etc.) must always contain a complete cue sheet of music used and are responsible to pass the cue sheet information on to ASCAP & BMI. Broadcasters without valid licenses require a direct performance license.

_____________________________________________

What is a Cue Sheet?

A complete list of music used, containing: Composer or Arranger, Composer or Arranger’s PRO, Publisher, Publisher’s PRO, CD Volume Number, Track Number, Music Library, Length of Time Used, and How it was Used (background, instrumental, on camera, etc).  A cue sheet makes the broadcaster aware of the musical content legal information so that they can notify the correct PRO of the performance. Music composers and publishers receive income from public/broadcast performance of their music.
